Sanctuary at Greyfriars.

We believe we should be a place of safety for all; offering welcome and hospitality to people fleeing violence and persecution and supporting our congregation to learn about sanctuary in the UK and how to extend welcome in the wider community.  We support the City of Sanctuary movement and have received a Church of Sanctuary Award.

Greyfriars’ Sanctuary Ministry seeks to offer welcome, belonging and practical support to people fleeing violence and persecution who may be isolated, vulnerable or seeking community.   We support the City of Sanctuary movement and have received a Church of Sanctuary Award.

We are part of the Welcome Churches Welcome Network, connecting refugees and people seeking asylum with welcoming local church communities. Find out more about Welcome Churches here https://welcomechurches.org/

Central to this work are 2 weekly gatherings.

Our Tuesday Conversational Kitchen (11am-1.30, term time) brings together people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds to share a meal, build friendships and practise conversational English in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Alongside helping participants gain confidence in speaking English, it creates opportunities for meaningful relationships, mutual support and greater integration into the local community.  Lessons and lunch are free and aimed at anyone who wants to improve their English and make friends with other international people.

Our Friday Drop-In (2-4pm) provides a safe, welcoming and friendly space where guests can enjoy refreshments, conversation, games and other activities. Our team is available to offer practical help where needed, including assistance with administrative tasks, accessing local services, referrals for food and clothing, and other forms of support.

The drop-in is about more than simply having somewhere to go for help. It provides an opportunity to build friendships, reduce isolation and develop a sense of belonging within a supportive community.
